Mr P. D. W. Verschaffelt, Public Service Commissioner, paid an unofficial visit to Waipukurau yesterday, his son Paul, being an inmate of the Waipukurau Hospital.
Mr R. W. Tate, who for seven years has held the position of Magistrate in a portion of South Taranaki, and who recently retired on superannuation, was farewelled by the legal profession and members of the police force. Mr Tate was the recipient, of a pair of handsomely bound volumes of “ ‘ Punch ’s’ History of Modern England.’ ’
After having been forced to keep to his bed at his palace at Afanly because of a heart attack, Archbishop Kelly is about again, but it was stated, recently by the authorities at St. Mary’s Basilica that he is still under medical treatment. He is resting at Manly. Archbishop Kelly will he eighty-three on February 13. His lifb has been one of amazing activity and this was his first illness of that nature.
It is expected that an announcement will be made shortly to the effect that Mr G. H. Mackley has been appointed general manager of the railways in succession to the late Mr P. G. Bousscll. Mr Mackley at present is actinggeneral manager, having previously been assistant general manager. The vacancy is likely to be filled by the promotion of Mr E. '.asey, chief mechanical engineer. Asked if any action had been taken to appoint a general manager, the 31 mister of Railways, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, said that ho had had no recommendation from the Railways Board regarding the matter.
