MR. COATES AM) FIN ANCE HIS NEW PORTFOLIO “The most talked of man in Nev, Zealand to-day is Mr. Coates,. Minister of Finance and Minister oi Customs, but comment is the reverse of laudatory. In the Parliamentary lobbies,. instance, amazement is openly txBJpressed that a former Minister of Public Works should have snouldered a portfolio for which he has had. no training, and which is the most important and onerous of all the Ministerial offices. “ 1 Why did Mr. Coates receive the portfolio?’ is a question frequently asked. perhaps more outside than within Parliamentary circles.
