THE WEEK’S WORK AMONG THE FLOWERS Remove all spent flowers. Stir the soil of the beds and borders. Remove unwanted laterals and shoots of Chrysanthemcms. The growths of Dahlias should be thinned and regulated. Keep Dahlias and Chrysanthemums tied and staked. Should caterpillers appear on Zinnias. Dahlias or Chrysanthemums spray with arsenate of lead. Plant Lachenalias, Freezias, Nerincs,
as soon as possible. Pinch out the tip of tho shoots of Herbaceous plants such as Sunflowers, Seleniums, Michaelmas Daisies. This will give a much better display of bloom. Herbaceous and tall-growing autumnflowering plants should be staked. Zinnias, Salvias, Dahlias can be planted now. Collect any Gladioli seed as soon as pods show signs of bursting. Gladioli should be lifted as soon as foliage begins to turn yellow. THE VEGETABLE PLOT Prepare all vacant ground for autumn planting and sowing. Runner Beans must be closely gather-
ed and, if possible, give the plants plenty of water. Dwarf Beans should be sown to keep up supplies. A sowing of Peas can be made, but deeply worked, rich soil, and plenty of moisture is necessary for success. Remove lateral growths of Tomatoes. Spray .and tic the plants to their supports. ’ Spray Tomatoes with Arsenate of lead, one ounce to two gallons of water, for caterpillars. Leeks and Celery can be planted. Shade the plants for a few days after planting. ' Celerv should be kept watered if possible. All vegetable crops benefit from a
mulching of lawn cuttings, old leaves or manure. Onions should be harvested as soon ns they mature. Spray Apples and Pears for Codlin moth, one ounce arsenate of lead to two gallons of water is all right.
