GREYMOUTH PROTEST REQUEST FOR SUSTENANCE PAY (Per Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Last Night. A large public meeting ’wprcsentir.g local bodies and unemployed was held, at the Town Hall' to-night to protest against the inadequacy of the relief allocation. The speakers included the Mayors of Greymouth, Runanga apd Brunner, the chairman of the Cob,den Town .Board and representatives or the county, unemployed and Labour organisations. A resolution was proposed:' “That this meeting strongly protest against the inadequate relief money in this district, urging the board to make an immediate increase. Also, that the Minister be asked to place Greyraoutli in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes, as the cost of living is far greater here than in th? cities. Also that the Minister he asked to review all schemes wfith a view to removing the hardship of the standdown or short week, but this not to be done at the expense of tho other throe weeks. ’ ’ An amendment, however, was carried as follows: “That this meeting make a definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relief work and in lieu thereof pay sustenance, as provided by the Unemployment Act.”
