RELIEF PAY

SINGLE MEN PROTEST PALM ERSTON N. DEPUT ATT ON PALMERSTON N.. Last Night. Stating that it was impossible for them to live on the provision made for them out of unemployment relief, a large deputation of single men waited on the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford this morning, requesting immediate provision of sustenance. The Mayor said he would communicate with the Labour Department, <md asked the men to wait until the end of the week for developments. Some of the men agreed to this. Later, a. deputation waited on tho executive of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, with a similar request. Ono speaker said a good number of men were on the verge of starvation. They wore willing to work, but they could not get it. They must have food. It was only natural. Camps in the district were full, but some of the men had been allowed to go hack temporarily.

“Four hundred single men are in n, desperate position,” said Mr J. de Cleone, chief spokesman for tho deputation. “I will toll you, and I am not going to heat about the hush, . that, things are moving. You must understand the' position. Single mon cannot go on much longer.” A telegram was sent'to the Unemployment. Board this afternoon asking for immediate relief. The telegram pointed out that there were no vacancies in tho camps and no provision was being made for the men’s sustenance.
