CONFERENCE RESULTS EMPIRE FREE TRADE “The reports to hand this week of the results of the deliberations of the Ottawa Conference indicate that the Dominions of the Empire appear to be disappointed that they did not g’et all they asked for/’’ said Mr C. G. C. Dernier (chairman) at the annual meeting of the Cheltenham Dairy Company at Fvilding 'yesterday. “In my opinion,” lie continued, “they could not have reasonably expected to have obtained all they asked for, in view of the fact that they had not a great deal to offer as compared with Britain’s trade with other parts of the world. “The tariff of 15s per cwt. in our favour represents l-’-d per lb. on butter, and, all things considered, it must be considered satisfactory. Although no immediate benefit is anticipated) therefrom, it means that a foundation is made for as basis for building up Empire trade in future. It is a gesture on behalf of the Mother Country to try to do something for us in New Zealand and this, combined with the tendency to lower tariffs between different parts of the Empire, should help to co-ordin-ate trade within the Empire.” Continuing, Mr Dormer felt that Empire free trade was likely to eventuate following a consideration of the conference findings. “Bound to come,” interjected ?Jr J. E. Jenkinson. Many parts of the Empire, Mr Dormer continued, were endeavouring to •maintain industries under protective tariffs to the detriment of the Mother Country's industries, and the Mother Country was being asked to give concessions to the primary production of the Dominions. England, he said, had not only to consider her Dominions, but of necessity was compelled to hoar in mind her very large foreign trade; therefore, ho did not think New Zealand could have expected any more from Ottawa.
