Statement Corrected
A correspondent writes correcting the statement which has appeared inseveral papers to the effect that no other province has a record in Ranfurly Shield Rugby equal to that of Auckland. “This is incorrect,” he states. “Hawke’s Bay, although it has act held the Shield so long as Auckland, has a better record. Both Hawke’s Bay and Auckland have defended the shield successfully 26 times but, whereas in two cases Auckland returned the shield by a draw, Hawke’s Bay won Bread, Butter and Bruit “People pay for bread and butter and can pay for fruit,” remarked a speaker at a meeting of the Canteibuiy Fruitgrowers’ Association, when urging the extension of the New Zealand market. Another speaker urged that an endeavour should be made to get grocers interested in the selling of apples. “Quite a lot of people don’t pay for bread and butter,” said a member who also is a storekeeper, “and if you introduce apples and people don’t pay for them the storekeeper will have to go hung.” American Newspapers The standard of American newspapers, generally speaking, is below that of New Zealand. This statement was made by Professor J. Shelley, who returned to Christchurch recently after a nine months tour of the United States. Except for a few of the leading dailies in the big cities, the standard is far below that of New Zealand papeis, he said. “They are neither as honest nor as thorough.” Not every city has one good, paper, he continued, and many cities bigger than Christchurch, had not one paper which would compare with any of those published in Christ- ■■ church.
