FOUND GUILTY
OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING A CHRISTCHURCH MOTORIST (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. In the Supreme Court to-day before the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, Alfred William Perrow stood trial on a charge of having on June 17, 1932, at Ashburton, negligently driven a motor car, thereby causing the death of Francis John .Samuel Major. For the prosecution it was alleged that Major was employed on the night of June 17 driving a truck laden with furniture witli a companion aboard. They stopped the truck to make adjustments to the gear box and while the truck was standing at the side or the road Perrow’s car passed and struck Major, inflicting fatal injuries. Borrow did not stop his car nor did he come back to enquire whether anyone was hurt. Perrow’s car was identified at Christchurch by a piece of flesh adhering to the mudguard and a pathologist had declared the flesh to be human. Perrow had taken a girl with him to Ashburton and returned to Christchurch with her and booked in a hotel as Mr and Mrs Murray. Perrow was found guilty and remanded until Thursday for sentence. After the jury had given their verdict his Honour said the prisoner did not even possess a good character, having been previously sentenced on a number of charges of false pretences.
NOT GUILTY OF CAUSING DEATH Colin Campbell, who stood his second trial, the first jury having disagreed on a charge of negligent driving, causing the death of Mrs Mary Gisbon, aged 76, at Christchurch, on May 1, was found not guilty. “The jury has found you not guilty,’’ said the. Chief Justice. “So be it. Unfortunately there is no power I regret to say, even in cases where the Court thinks the holder of a license should be prohibited, to make such r.n order except in the case of conviction. You arc discharged.”
