BIG BLAZE

Nurses’ Home Destroyed

OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE

AWAKENED BY SMOKE

(Pei' Press Association)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

The Nurses’ Home, a six-roomed wooden building attached to St. Helen’s Maternity Hospital, Harper Street, Sydenham, was destroyed by fire early this morning.

Seven nurses sleeping on the premises were awakened by smoke and heat at 12.30. They had a fortunate escape, only the fact that they were used to sudden calls preventing

serious consequences. They saved a few personal effects. The building was the property of the Government and carried no insurance.
