RAILWAY SERVICE

--•- — In Central H.B. GENERAL MANAGER N.Z.R. INTERVIEWED AN UNFAVOURABLE RECEPTION In the course of a business visit to Wellington last week, Mr. A. E. Jull, Member for the district, took advantage of the opportunity to interview the General Manager of Railways, Mr P. G. Roussell, in reference to the representations of the Waipawa, Waipukurau, and Napier Chambers of Commerce urging the restoration of the early morning train from Waipukurau to Napier. Mr. Jull pointed out that the country districts were labouring under considerable inconvenience by the restricted train and postal services.

In reply Mr. Roussell stated that he had gone into the matter thoroughly, and regretted that, in view of the falling revenue, the Railways Board could not see their way to restore the morning train. He pointed out that the night train which it was desired should be delayed at Waipukurau till the following morning was at present serving a very useful purpose in delivering goods and stock at Napier and Hastings for distribution early in the morning. But apart from this the revenue from the early train had been steadily declining prior to the earthquake, and would in all probability have been eliminated in the ordinary course of events as an economic measure.

In view of the refusal of the General Manager of Railways to reinstate the train Mr. Jull has suggested to the Postal Department that arrangements might be made with the Waipukurau-Hasings bus service to carry a mail. This would permit of letters being delivered into the postal boxes at Napier by 11 a.m., rendering it possible for replies to be received in Waipawa by the 4.45 p.m. train. Mr. Jull’s suggestion will come before

the next meeting of the Chamber of

C ommerce.
