The New Zealand golf team which leaves on Tuesday for Sydney to defend the Kirk-Windeyer Cup, enjoyed a good try out on the Hutt links to-day when they were pitted against a strong side of local amateurs, winning the singles by three games to two and the foursomes by two games to one. Brinsden, the Auckland representative, and Silk, the Wanganui player, had not previously played on the Hutt course. Following are the results, the names of the New Zealand players being mentioned first: —
Singles.—Rama Wagg beat T. H. Horton, 3 and 2. H. A. Black beat A. D. S. Duncan, 3 and 2.
J. P. Hornabrook lost to J. H. Drake, 2 down.
H. D. Brinsden lost to D. C. Collins, 3 and 2.
B. M. Silk beat D. O. Whyte, 1 up. Foursomes. —Wagg and Black lost to Horton and Duncan, 3 and 2. Hornabrook and Brinsden beat Drake and Collins, 2 up. Silk and Cook beat Whyte and Petley, 3 and 1.
Presentations Made
Sir Alexander Roberts, president of the New Zealand Golf Council, wished the New Zealand team success in Australia and said the New Zealand and New South Wales had now won the Kirk-Windyer Cup twice. The Hutt Golf Club presented Wagg with a cabin trunk and travelling bag as the first Hutt member to secure a place in the New Zealand team. Returning thanks, Wagg said the New Zealand team possessed plenty of golf and he hoped they would be able to produce it when required in Australia.
British Golf AM ATEU R CH AM PION SH IP DE FOREST WINS THE TITLE LONDON, May 24. Scottish hope for the amateur golf championship disappeared when Fiddian, the 23-year-old English champion, defeated McAuvie at the last green in the semi-final, by 3 and 1. In the meantime de Forest, a 25-year-old Londoner, a son of Baron de Forest, defeated Lionel Munn, the 47-year-old veteran, after a desperate fight at the 21st. Both finalists were chosen to-day to join the Walker Cup team. Fiddian is described as one of the most brilliant golfers England has produced since Tolley and Wethered.
WOMEN’S CH AMPION SHIP
LONDON, May 28.
In the women’s golf championship 181 and less qualified. These include Miss Orcutt as leader with an aggregate of 151, Miss Enid Wilson with 154 second, Misses Vanivie 158 and Miss La Coste 163. AU Americans qualified.
PROFESSIONAL RECORD
LONDON, May 29.
Mitchell, winning £350 in the professional tournament at Long Ashton, Bristol, created a record for four successive rounds of the one course, returning 68 and 71 and 65 and 6;.
