SYDNEY, May 27.

An Earthquake of great magnitude was registered at the. Riverview Observatory at 2.14 this morning. The disturbance was in the vicinity of New Guinea, upwards of 1600 miles from Sydney.

UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH

FOR JUNKERS ’PLANE

DARWIN, May 27.

A Western Australian Airways aeroplane, with three skilled aviators aboard, conducted a search of the coast from Wyndham to Darwin for the missing Junkers flying boat and later diligently searched Bathurst and Melville Islands without success. They will return to Wyndham this evening.

THE OTTAWA CONFERENCE.

LORD BEAVERBROOK OPTIMISTIC

MONTREAL, May 27.

An optimistic outlook for the Imperial Economic Conference was voiced by Lord Beaverbrook, the Canadian born peer and owner of the London “Daily Express.” “Not only will the Ottawa Imperial Conference achieve fine results, but they will be lasting ones. More than that, I expect to see their effect almost immediately after the confer-

ence is over.”
