MANGAOBAPA BRANCH .n, MONTHLY COMPETITION A meeting of the Mangaorapa Women’s Institute was held on Friday Mrs A. H. Hope presiding over a good, attendance. The monthly competition, the best article made from a sugar-bag, resulted in a pleasing and varied collection of entries which were judged by Mrs Cracroft Wilson of Christchurch. Mrs Connell gained first place, while Mrs M. Davidson came a close second with a tie for two entries, a humpty made from coloured bags worked with, ap-
pliques and a large teddy bear made from natural coloured bags. There was also an attractive table mat in black edged with gold and embroidered with a pink rose, a pretty green drawnthread embroidered cover for wireless sot. a striking roller-towel with stencilled edges, a neatly embroidered house apron in natural colour, a useful cushion, cover in red with pockets for books, a scrubbing apron in natural colour edged with cretonne nth a pocket, for cushion to kneer sn, a bleached hand-towel edged with, colour, a stencilled cushion and a pair of oven gloves. A sixpenny “bring and buy’’ stall containing many interesting and useful parcels, did a brisk trade and added considerably towards Institute funds. Mrs A. H. Hope by special request, repeated a demonstration in smocking and displayed many finished articles with samples of the work. Each member worked a sample in stitches -and patterns that, she fancied in preparation for a competition to be held later.
A dainty and refreshing afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Hogg and Rcdward.
