BUSINESS STANDSTILL
IW SIGHTSEERS JBIiMO POLICE PROHIBIT MEETING SHOW BUILDING THREATENED (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Most businesses were more or less at a standstill this morning. Every street is full with sightseers, but very few women are abroad. Patrols in tin hats are constantly parading along, and no collection of persons is allowed. The meeting of Relief workers to have as sembled at the Basin Reserve at 10 o’clock this morning, was met by locked gates, and the police, therefore the meeting did not eventuate.
Two meetings of workers were held at the Trades Hall. Over 1000 relief workers turned up this morning, receiving stand-by pay. It was a very wet morning.
Twenty-five jobs were partly manned. Protection for the men at work is being considered.
The Winter Show Association has been threatened with the demolition of its buildings if it continues to employ small gangs.
