Reduction of Salaries
BY FIFTEEN FEB CENTUM
ONEHUNGA COUNCIL’S DECISION
(Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, Last Night
A decision to reduce by 15 per cent, the salaries of all the officials of the Onchunga Borough Council receiving £4 10/- or more a week was made by the council last evening. The honorarium of the Mayor, Mr E. Morton, is to be reduced by a similar amount. The matter will be reviewed in three months.
This was the recommendation of the council in committee following a discussion at the previous meeting upon the decision that the working time of the cutside staff should be reduced to one week in three. Subsequently tho foreman reported that the reduced time of working was detrimental to economy. He said that the efficiency had deteriorated by over 50 per cent.
When the matter was discussed last evening the Mayor moved that a general reduction of 71 per cent, be made on all wages and salaries except those of the two girls in the office. He thought 15 per cent, was too drastic and that results could not be obtained from a dis-satisfied staff.
After further discussion a general reduction of 15 per cent, was agreed to.
