A Harbour Fatality
MARRIED MAN DROWNED COMPANION WITNESSES TRAGEDY. (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Swimming out to recover a rowing boat which had drifted away from the shore, a man named Charles Orr, married, with several children was drowned off Ward Island, Wellington Harbour, shortly before nightfall this evening. It appears that Orr, formerly a carpenter, left Rona Bay in company with a Maori named Kingi to engage in net dragging operations. The. two men landed on Ward Island, and shortly afterwards it was seen that the boat, through not being pulled far enough up on to the beach, was drifting away some distance off the shore. To avoid the loss of the boat and spending the night without shelter on the island, Orr stripped and swam out to recover the boat. He had not gone far, however, before the remaining man on the beach saw him throw up his hands and sink almost immediately. The second man forthwith rushed in to the other’s rescue, hut could find no trace of him. The body was recovered later in the evening.
