There was general rejoicing among Waipukurau retailers to-day, when, for the first time for many mid-week half-holidays this season, the first fine summer’s day was enjoyed. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce last evening passed a resolution supporting the Associated Chambers in protesting against the Government’s interference in private enterprise in connection with broadcasting. At the wool sales in Sydney there was good competition by all sections of rhe trade for merino fleece and skirtings. Greasy merino made ISd, which was the top price for the season. 12,520 bales were offered and 11,179 sold, also 4625 privately.

A reminder is given that at eight o’clock to-night a complimentary social and dance is to be tendered by friends and supporters to Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., at the Municipal Theatre, Waipawa. Conveyances from _ Waipukurau have been arranged.

The Railway Department has at present a gang of men engaged on the southern side- of the Ruataniwha street crossing at Waipukurau, removing the cattle-stops over the three sets of rails and replacing the obstructions with ballast and grills of totara timber. It is not intended to remove the stops on the northern side of the crossing on account of interfering with stormwater drainage.

As the. result of a successful shop day held in Waipukurau yesterday, the Waipukurau branch of the Women’s Division, Farmers’ Union, raised the very creditable amount of £lB 6s 6d. The branch’s funds and also the Women’s Rest Rooms will benefit to a considerable, extent as the result of the effort, and the members are to he congratulated on their enterprise. During the day a number of competitions were conducted, the. successful persons being Miss Joan Smyrk, who won the doll, Mrs W. A. Chambers to whom the trinket box was awarded, -.and Mr C. F. Haycock, who drew a box «of sweets.
