A Flat Market

FOR FAT AND STORE CATTLE.

AT WAIPUKURAU TO-DAY.

Cold wintery weather prevailed for the holding of the weekly stock sale at Waipukurau to-day, a strong westerly cross wind with light intermittent showers rendering conditions anything but pleasant. As there -was no sale last week on account of the Royal Show, one would have expected a larger yarding of stock, but this w’as not the case, the number of sheep and cattle penned, being if anything, smaller than that o£ a fortnight ago. The tone of the market was dull, and though the majority of the lots were disposed of, the prices realised were hardly satisfactory. There was a good attendance of buyers from the district, whilst Hastings, Napier and Dannevirke were also represented. Fat Cattle.

A small yarding, minus any sorts of real quality. All lots were sold, yet the market was dull, and values were down to an appreciable extent. The top price in this section was £8 5/-, paid for a Hereford-Shorthorn cross cow. Values were: Four big framed cows, on the light side £6 12/4; 6 P.A. cows and heifers £6 17/6; prime Hereford and Shorthorn cross cow £8 5/-; 2 P.A. cows and heifers light prime, £7 10/-.

Store Cattle. Store cattle ran into a market that was decidedly flat and though the majority sold, the prices paid did not do justice to the quality Values were well down on an entry consisting of some good sorts. Four light empty Hereford and Shorthorn cross heifers, £3 10/-; 18months P.A. steers £5 5/-; 9 P.A. 3-year dairy cows, a good line £7 8/-; 9 yearling P.A. steers £4 17/6; 3 Shorthorn steers passed at £6 2/6; 1 small ditto £3/10/-; 16 1-year P.A. steers, small, £3 7/6; 3 P.A. weaner heifers £1 11/6; 10 yearling P.A. heifers, £2 10/-; 3 yearling Shorthorn heifers £1 10/-; 2 light, 11-months steers, £2 15/-; 4 yearling Shorthorn steers £1 15/-; 2 yearling heifers, £1 2/6.

Dairy Cattle. The sale for dairy cattle was in keeping with the general tone of the market, one pen out of five offered being dispensed with. One sound Jersey cow and calf, 3rd calver passed at £3 10/-; 1 Shorthorn bull £3; 4 big framed Shorthorn bulls passed at £5; 4 ditto smaller, and rougher, £4 10/-, passed; 1 yearling Jersey bull passed in, no bid.

Fat Sheep. Values were easier in this portion, a small entry eliciting little competition. The sale dragged slightly for these, though the buyers were quick to appreciate a line of 8 good conditioned prime wethers, and bumped the price up to 24/-. Fourteen light ewes passed at 13/-; 18 fat ewes, a sound line, 15/- passed; 21 fat ewes were passed at 13/- and I<± ditto passed at the same price.

Store Sheep. Sheep went cheaply in this section at easier rates, and one line in particular of 75 woolly wether hoggets, bright good conditioned sheep, was a snip at the price paid, (12/10). 14 light m.a. ewes and 14 lambs 12/6; 75 woolly wether hoggets 12/10; another good line of 36 ewe hoggets 14/6.
