Obituary
MR MATTHEW McGRATH.
There passed away at an early hour this morning at the Waipukurau Public Hospital a well-known and popular local businessman in the person of Mr Matthew McGrarh, at the age of fifty years. Born at Waimate, South Canterbury, the deceased, who was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs James McGrath, was educated at the Waimate Convent School On leaving that institution he took up farming at Otoro, near Waimate and sixteen years latex - he came to Hawke’s Bay and was employed by Mi - A. C. Russell at Hatuma for five years. Desir-
ing a change of occupation deceased came to Waipukurau about eleven years ago and established a bookseller’s and stationery business in a shop owned by Mr Windle and situated neax - where the Municipal Theatre now stands. In the same yeax - he married Miss Mary Windle, of Waipukurau, who died some six
years’ ago. The late Mr McGrath was a familial' figure on tke local bowling green and he always took a keen interest in the game and the welfare and progres of the Bowling Club. Deeased also made many friends as a member of the Waipukurau Orphans’ Club in which he held the office of Chief Steward for several years. In connection with his work for this club deceased was always reliable, enthusiastic and by the splendid services which he rendered, did much towards placing Orphandom on a sound footing in Waipukurau.
A son, aged ten years, is left to mourn the loss of his father. There are also four sisters and two brothers, namely, Mesdames P O’Donnell, Waimate, T. Kearne, Waimate, J. Leitch, Wellington, and R. S. Tangney, Morven, Waimate; Messrs Michael McGrath, Fitzroy, Melbourne and William McGrath, Waimate. To the bereaved son and relatives sincere sympathy is extended. The funeral is to take place at the Waipukurau cemetery to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
