CAPTAIN MATTHEWS CRASHES
AVIATOR’S FORTUNATE ESCAPE

SYDNEY, October 27.
Captain Matthews crashed on route to Sydney to-day. His machine was rather badly damaged, but Matthews is unhurt and reached Sydney in another aeroplane at 4.5 p.m., when he received an enthusiastic welcome.
Leaving Brisbane at 7 a.m., escorted by Flying-Officer Owen in a Ryan monoplane, Matthews landed at Lismore for lunch, where he received a civic reception. He resumed the flight shortly after 2 p.m. and had attained an altitude of 100 feet when his engine
stopped. Matthews glided to earth, and struck a wire fence, He Smashed the undercarriage, propeller and portion of the fuselage. The crowd was relieved when Matthews climbed out unhurt. He lit a cigarette and remarked: “Well, that’s that. ’ ’
