Competition Winners
MUSIC AND ELOCUTION. SUCCESS OF MISS LILY WELSH. It is particularly pleasing to record the success gained by Waipukurau competitors at the annual musical and elocutionarv competitions held at Napier during the Easter holidays. ( Signal success was won by Miss Lily | Welsh, L.A.8., who in addition to gaining an award for piano playing, scored severals wins as a, vocalist. Out of fourteen entries for the song competition by New Zealand composer, Miss Welsh tied with Mr. E. G. Stevenson (Napier), 80 points for first place. In the Scotch song competition Miss Welsh gained first honours with 79 points, and she was also adjudged the winner of an Irish song, with 80 points, against. 18 competitors. Eighteen entries were received for the ladies’ Operatic solo, amateur, and in this competition Miss Welsh gained 77 points and was declared the winner. In the competition negro songs, spiritual, Miss Welsh gained second place with 77 points against' 12 competitors. There were eight competitors in the open competition for champion piano playing and. Miss Welsh was awarded second honours. Miss Nancy Welsh, who now resides at' Napier, and who is" a sister to Miss Lily Welsh, won the mezzo soprano competition with 79 points. Waipukurau also had another competitor in Miss Averill Nelson, who gained second place in the test recital for ladies. I Hearty congratulations are extended I to the winners, and to Miss Welsh particularly, who has put up a very meritorious performance.
