;• The Hutt by-election takes place to--day,- the three candidates being Mr 11. Johnston (Reform), Mr F- Kerr (United) and Mr W. Nash" (Labour). Considerable speculation, is rife as to the result which is very difficult to pick. Two relay teams from the Waipukurau District High School, one of. four boys and the other comprising four ; girls, left by car this afternoon for Waipawa to compete in the annual . sports gathering of the .Waipawa Dis r.trict High School. The following holidays will be observed by the departments of the Waipukurau Borough Council: —Borough Office and Circulating Library, December 25th to January 4th; both days inclusive, and the Public Reading-room, December 25th, 26th, and 27th and ■ January Ist and 2nd, 1930. In reply to Or. W. A. Chambers the Mayor (Mr R. McLean) said that arrangements had been made for the second sealing of Ruataniwha Street to be carried out by the Waipawa County Council when it has completed its present main highways work, and prior to moving the plant to Takapau. The work would be commenced probably about February next. At the meeting of the local Borough Council on Monday night several members referred in eulogistic terms to the good work done and the faithful services rendered during the year ful services rendered during the lear of His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. McLean) it was resolved to pay the gang one full day’s pay at Christmas and also again at the New Year, as a slight token of of their .services. '' I
