SUCCESSFUL PUPILS

District High School

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY

With the thoughts of another year’s work behind them, and the anticipation of six weeks’ of glorious freedom from school, it was inevitable'that the breaking-up ceremony of the Waipukurau District High School this afternoon would be characterised by a spirit of youthful glee. Coupled, with the proximity of the Christmas festival and all tluft it means, youthful spirits were not to be bounded. To-day was a day of days. To many of the older scholars it meant the passing of a milestone in their education, a step from a primary school to a secondary school. To others it meant only a change of teachers, and perhaps a new classroom. The faces would be the same, and life next year would continue on its even tenor. However, none oi these sober reflections were passing through the minds of the children, to judge by their happy faces, as they sat with parents, friends and teachers in the Municipal Theatre this afternoon.

The chairman of the local High School Committee (Mr W. G. Bryce) presided, and associated with him were Cr. John Warren, members of the School Committee, Mrs Bryce, and Mr F. B. Curd (headmaster). An apology for unavoidable absence was tendered on behalf of His Worship the Mayor (Air R. McLean). in a happy speech, befitting the occasion, the chairman extended a hearty welcome to those present. To the scholars he congratulated them on the progress that they had made during the year, and expressed the hope that they would have a very merry Christinas and a happy and prosperous New Year. He referred to the fact that, the school had had a hard year, on account of sickness among the pupils. Of a total of 400 children in the primary department and 65 in the secondary department, it was necessary to have an average attendance of 361 scholars in order that the school could retain its present grading of grade 6. The chairman referred to the good work of Standard VI., and said that under the tutorship of Mr Walsh, the class had put up a record for examination results.

It was with much sadness, the chariman said, that it would be the last occasion on which Mr Curd would be present as headmaster. Mr Curd was retiring on superannuation, and in recording the committee's sincere appreciation oi all Air Curd had done for' the progress and welfare of the school, Air Bryce concluded by wishing Air Curd long life, prosperity, and good health during his retirement.

On behalf of the committee and parents, Mr Bryce extended sincere thanks and appreciation to the members of the teaching staff for the good w.ork which they had performed during the year, and said that they had carried out their duties loyally and with credit to themselves, the pupils, and the school. (Applause). He expressed the hope that the teachers, too, would enjoy their well-earned rest, and concluded by wishing them the compliments of the season.
