The Rev. Canon E. D. Rice spent several days in Wellington this week, attending the annual meeting of the Anglican Board of Missions. (
Mr A. H. Martin, a member of the local staff of the Bank of Australasia, is under notice of transfer to Wellington. Mr A. M. McLeavcy, of Wellington branch, will fill the breach.
Mi* R. G*. Cook has accepted the position of honorary secretary to the local branch of the Educational Asociation under the auspices of Victoria University College.
Mr G. C. Munns, of Mt. Roskill, has been chosen as the United Political Party’s candidate for the Roskill seat. He was formerly a member of the Gisborne Borough Council.
Anionic the visitors to Waipukurau this week was Mr A. C. Major, of Masterton, well-known in Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay legal circles. He was the guest of Mr and Mrs D. B. Kent during his. stay.
Mr S. G. Smith, a former liberal member, has been definitely selected as tho United party candidate for the Now Plymouth seat. Mr Thomas Lockhead, of To Puna, will bo the candidate for Tauranga, and Mr J. M. Turnbull, of G’lenmassey, for Raglan.
A cable message records tho death of tho Hon. David F. Wilber, formerly United States Consul-General in New Zealand, at Oneonta, Now York, aged 69. Mr Wilber took a great interest in Now Zealand after he left the Dominion and donated the. handsome Wilber Cup for Frcsian Cattle competition at tho Manawatu Show.
The Independent Liberal-Labour candidate for the Waipawa constituency, Mr D. B. Kent, will address the electors at the following places. — Wilder Settlement, Wilder School, August 24; Wallingford, Wallingford School, August 24 (later in the evening) ; Wanstcad, Wanstead School, August 25.
An Australian Press Association messabo announces the death of Mr Louis Tracy, Journalist and author. Born at Liverpool in 1863, Mr Tracey lectured and wrote extensively on the war. Some of his publications wore ‘‘Rainbow Island,” “Diana of the Moors,” “His Unknown Wife,” “A Son of the Immortals.”
Tho many friends of Mr and Mrs Philip Ryan, well-known as settlers in the To Uri district of late, and formerly of Porangahau, wijl learn with regret of the death of their daughter Norma, a very popular young lady. Her death took place in the Nelson Hospital, on the staff of which she was a nurse, her illess (pneumonia) being of short duration. Mr David Annand, bookseller, wellknown in Waipukurau, but during recent years engaged in business in Napier, who has purchased the local bookselling establishment of Mr W. J. Alpe, will assume possession on the Ist prox. Mr and Mrs Alpe will continue to reside in Waipukurau but contemplate ! spending several months on a holiday tour abroad.
The Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board has granted the Secretary (Mr. G. E. Fowler) a month’s leave of absence, accumulated leave being inclusive, in anticipation of his annual vacation, and incidentally the Chairman (Mr A. C. Russell) referred in complimentary terms to tho services rendered by Mr Fowler.
Mr R. D. Elliott, Inspecting Dental officer for the Department of Health, paid a visit to Waipukurau on Wednesday and conferred with His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. McLean) and a number of the representatives of interested bodies, viz., the Borough Council (Mr W. Johnstone), District High School (Mr W. G. Bryce, chairman), and Chamber of Commerce (Messrs G._ E. Fowler and A. C. Holms) as to the district dental clinic position. Mr Elliott is to report back to tho Director of Dental Hybiene (Colonel T. A. Hunter) as to the result of the deliberations.
