Air Attack On London
VICTORY FOR THE DEFENCE Australian and N.Z. Press Association. LONDON, August 14. The official report on the air attack shows that there were 28 raids during a 15 hours’ battle. In general the victory rested with the defence, though a. few big bombers broke through, the hits including the Air Ministry Jn Kingsway. One squadron of the fastest bombers, taking 28 minutes from Shoreham to tho objective at Eastham, dived through three layers of clouds without being intercepted, though they met fighters going back and lost two machines. On the contrary, another squadron of attackers lost seven out of a total of nine.
The operations were recommenced at (> o’clock to-night, chiefly thrilling duels between giant bombing planes, the attackers, and small high speed fighting machines, the defenders. There was a curious effect throughout London, people standing in groups craning their necks to watch machines 10,000 feet up.
