HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION. E; A. GOODGER will address A MEETING in the MUNICIPAL THEATRE TO-NIGHT At 8 p.m. W. G. Bryce, Esq., will preside. . MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE BOROUGH OF WAIPUKURAU. £ADIES AND GENTLEMEN — I beg to inform you that I shall, have the pleasure of addressing you on TUESDAY NEXT, at ST. MARY’S HALL, at 8 o’clock in the evening, in support of my candidature for the office of. Mayor. With regard to policy, I may state, briefly, that I should support any scheme which has for its object the advancement and progress of the Borough, amongst which may be mentioned construction and improvement of roads and streets; lighting; water supply; horse or motor traction for the performance of road work and carting; raising, consolidation, and redemption of loans; disposal of the Borough’s surplus lands; rating on the unimproved or the annual value; layingout of land for recreation and beautifying purposes; and the efficient drainage of the Borough. , With regard to roads and streets, I think that the first new work to be. done, should be the tar-sealing or else the bitumenising of Herbert Street, Church Street, Porangahau Road to the Cemetery boundary, and Ruataniwha Street from the Post Office to the Western Boundary of the Borough. The Reading Poll, which was taken last year, appears to have been defated because the amount which was sought to bo raised, would have raised the rates too high, in proportion to the actual benefit which would have been derived from the performance of the work. In view, therefore, of the continuous cost of maintenance on these thoroughfares, and the cost of watering Ruataniwha Street, it seems to me that a poll should be taken forthwith for the purpose of obtaining the views of the Ratepayers as to the necessity of doing the work. If the proposal were rejected, then an effort ought to be made to do the work out of the Borough’s ordinary revenue. With respect to the grading of Ruataniwlia Street, that" could be left alone in the meantime; as, by raising the outer wall of the channelling to the level of the channel at the footpath, the camber would be reduced by about 6 inches. With regard to the other matters of policy, I shall address you more fully next Tuesday evening. Yours faithfully, D. B. KENT.
