Mr W. F. Watson, of Napier, a member of the local Fire Board, is on a visit to Waipukurau.

Mr G. E. Fowler, whose local-body and civic record, including that of Town Clerk for a considerable period, entitles his candidature to - special attention, especially on the score of financial knowledge, states that if his experience is considered to be of the kind fitting him for the : office of . a councillor, the support of electors on Wednesday will be appreciated. ?

Mr D. B. Kent ,a candidate for the Mayoralty, announces in our advertising columns to-day that he will address the electors in St. Mary’s Hall on Tuesday night, also that he will: support any scheme which has for its objective the progress of the Borough, including street improvements, by means of tar-sealing or bitumcnjsing.' The first of a series of crib tournaments between the Oddfellows and Foresters was held on Wednesday night. After a very pleasant evening’s play, which ended in a- draw, it was decided to play-off, two tables playing crib and one euchre. In response to overtures from a considerable number of electors, Mr W. Johnstone is a candidate for municipal honours. His lengthy period of localbody service, also long association with commercial life, as well as many general civic activities, tend to fit him in every respect for the position of a local Borough Councillor, and the placing of confidence in him is therefore warranted.

The funeral of the late Mrs Breuer took place yesterday afternoon at Waipawa, when a large number showed their respect by attending, despite the inclement weather. At the graveside the service was impressively carried out by the Rev. F. W. Robertson. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathising friends, and in many ways the family have been shown how much the deceased was esteemed and her death felt by a wide circle of friends.

Still another old identity of Waipukurau has gone to her long rest, in the person of Mrs Naomi Newman,' wife of Mr W. Newman, a resident of Racecourse Road. The late Mrs Newman left England for New Zealand’ some 52 years ago, landing at Napier. After a short stay there, Mr and Mrs Newman came up to this part of the province, Mr Newman being engaged in construction work on the railway between Waipawa and To Auto. They have resided in Waipukurau for over 50 years, and have witnessed its growth and expansion from a very small hamlet to its present size.. Deceased was in her 78th year at the time of her death.
