COUNTY COUNCIL

WAffUKURAU MEETING. SENEGAL BUSIMBSS. The Waipukurau County Council met for the transaction of. monthly business on Saturday, there being pro-, sent Messrs A. O. Russell (chairman.,), M. Tansey, J. H. Kibblewhite, B. J. McCormick, A. W. Elliott, W. T. Edgecombe, and W. J. Edgecombe. Pending the arrival of the chairman, a few minutep late, Cr. L. M. Monckton was voted to the chair. RESOLUTION OF • CONDOLENCE; The acting-chairman paid a high tribute to the late. Mr Paul Hunter, whoso splendid services to the district and many commendable qualities as a man were remarked upon. A resolution of regret, aGnd sympathy with his relatives, was carried in the 'usual manner. CORRESPONDENCE INWARD. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows:— Waipawa Hospital Board extending an invitation to the chairman and members to attend the opening ceremony in connection with the Nurses’ Home. Wm. Porter asking that pcrmisisOn be granted for a .lin pipe lino ’■ to bo placed under the road adjacent to his property. On the motion of Mr McCormick the request was granted. Jas McCulloch in regard to daniago sustained to the hood of his car. in passing a County motor truck while standing on the Lower Gorge Road. The Overseer stated that other cars had passed the truck safely. On the motion of Cr. W. J. Edge- / combe seconded by Cf Monckton it was resolved not to recognise the liability, and to forward, as proposed by Cr - Tansey, an explanation as tendered by the Overseer. 1 Central Hawk’s Bay Power Board forwarding a copy of the financial. statement. 3 The chairman said that the courtesy thus extended by the Board could be appreciated by comparison with the Hospital Board for instance, which, failed to forward details of the kind. Such half-yearly ihform&tion was 1 very desirable as local bodies should know how the finances of boards’ on which they were represented were moving. . . Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Association as to the position of the timber industry, photographs being forwarded. Cr Kibblewhite said that it was obvious that the New Zealand millers could not compete against the large and up-to-date milling concerns in America. Other councillors concurred. It was resolved that no action be taken. N.Z. Sanitary Inspectors’ Association in regard to the annual conference in Auckland. Inspector of Health (Mr P. A. Milne) anent travelling expenses to the con 7 ference. On the motion of Cr. Kibblewhite, seconded by Cr. W. T. Edgecombe it was decided to vote £2 2/-. Lands and Survey Department regarding the proposed case of waste land along the Tiiki Tuki River. No action would be taken pending a decision as to whether the land concerned is Crown property. Same in regard to fox-glove, a noxious weed, being included in the County list. Cr Tansey said that the weed does not flourish in a dry climate, and Ci' Monckton mentioned the undesirability of cutting the plant. No action was taken. Public Works Department as-' concerning a subsidy (£4B 13/7) on main highways.—Received. Same regarding survey of the Lower Gorge-Onga Onga Road, desired by the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce. . The cost of the survey would not be more than £25 per mile. SPECIAL MEETINGS A special meeting was held to confirm the special order passed last month anent excluding the Pahiatua County Council as a party to the Hawke’s Bay joint By-laws. On the motion of Cr Kibblewhitc seconded by Cr McCormick a resolution of confirmation was carried. At a further special meeting the special order passed as a meeting held a month back amending the joint Bylaws and making Health By-laws* was confirmed on the motion of Cr Kibblewhite seconded by the Chairman.

The Chairman reported on the recent visit of the Board. If the road work '■were eventually proceeded with, the Council and other bodies involved, would he called upon to pay half the cost of the survey as advised by the Board, which is to carry out the survey. On the Chairman’s motion the letter was received ; Same as to concrete, and subsidised structures, —Referred to the Overseer. Main Highways Board in regard to loans to local bodies being limited to £50,000 at any one time, redeemable within 10 days. The advice was received. Same in regard to the hire purchase agreement anent the Fordson Wehr grader. The Chairman and Clerk were appointed to sign the agreement. NOXIOUS WEED Cr W. J. Edgecombe moved that foxglove be declared a noxious weed, and .the Chairman seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr Tansey remarked that blackberry and other plants more objectionable than fox-glove were not included in the County noxious weeds list. MATTERS FINANCIAL The accounts passed for payment totalled £509 8s 5. The December pcy-shect, as estimated, in anticipation of no meeting in January, as usual, totalling £2OO, was also approved. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS It was decided that the County Office be cloned for three weeks during the holiday season. SEASONAL GREETINGS The Chairman extended to Councillors seasonable greetings and referred to the position of County affairs as being very satisfactory. He took exception to the note of pessimism struck in some quarters as to the condition of the farming community. With the rise in the price of wool the outlook for the country was bright. He wished to thank Councillors, the staff, and the Press for their kindly co-operation, the latter service being now an excellently complete one. Tn conclusion the Chairman paid a warm tribute to the late Mr Paul Hunter as to 'his generous nature and valuable services to the district. Crs Tansey, Elliott, and TV. J. Edgecombe were not in agreement with the Optimistic point of view expressed by the Chairman as to the outlook of the farming community. Crs Kibblewhite and Monckton also endorsed the dissentient expressions. The “Press”, heartily riciprocates the sentiments expressed by the chairman.
