CHRISTMAS FETE.

BED CROSS AT PUKEORA. The Waipukurau and District Red Cross Society was responsible for an. excellently arranged and successful Christmas fete, held at the Pukeora Sanatorium on Saturday. ‘The president (Mrs E. D. Rice), secretary (Mrs E. Broad), and members of the various Red Cross branches throughout Central Hawke’s Bay are doing a noble work, and they received the hearty thanks of the patients for their kindness in providing the afternoon’s entertainment. The Waipawa branch arranged the pleasing, orchestral programme provided by a party of artists organised by Mesdamcs McLean and McLeod, of Waipawa, the programme being grcatly appreciated. Miss Major gave recitations, her contribution meeting with a good reception. Games, and competitions were arranged for all patients, including cot cases, the prizes for which were provided by the Hastings Red Cross Society.' Special prizes were donated by Mesdames Chambers, Morris, Paget, and De Lacey, and Miss Wilson, of "Waipukurau. After Mrs Rice had presented the prizes, Dr. McLean, thanked the Red Cross for their splendid effort. He said they were always welcome, and were doing a great work. Padre Steel returned thanks on behalf of the patients. Mr .1. H. Kibblewhite replied on behalf of the Red Cross Society, and said they were out- to make the life of soldier patients as cheerful as possible. It was a labour of love, and the Society was pleased to know that any little they did was much appreciated. Canon Rice also addressed a few remarks appropriate to the occasion, to the gathering. . . . 7 . -s--
