i A Hastings Press Association message, to-day, announces that Major Frederick William Gascoyne, a veteran of the Maori War, died this morning, at the advanced age of 88. He was born at Cawnpore in 1838, and came to New Zealand, with his father, an officer in the East India Company, in 1883. He joined the Colonial Defence Force in 1863, and subsequently was a member of Captain Fraser’s expedition for service on the East Coast, taking part in many important engagements. Major Gascoyne was for a time a magistrate in the Chatham Islands, after which he settled in Hastings, where he lived in retirement for close upon 30 years.
