COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held on ►Saturday, being attended by Crs A. C. Russell (chairman), J. 11. Kibblowhite, B. J. McCormick, M. Tanscy, L. M. Monckton, A. W. Elliott, W. D. Fleming, AV. J. Edgecombe, and W. T. Edgecombe. CORRESPONDENCE INWARD. Boyce and Fraser wrote as to the matter of an improved method of hauling metal. —The Overseer is to report on this proposition. Colonial Motor Co. ,Ltd., in regard to the rcfjpd of freight on the AVe.hr adjustment promised was favourably remarked upon. N-Aynj. Conn ties ’ Association, apropos the Dominion Federated Drivers’ Union dispute, it having ben decided by the latter body to cite all counties as parties to the award. The Clerk and Overseer were deputed to attend to the matter, Cr McCormick moving and the chairman seconding a motion to this effect. The Council resolved to oppose being cited. Waipukurau Borough Council, in regard to the outfall from the septic tank being attended to, the Council to pay half the cost. It was advanced that the trees felled by the Council had caused a blockage. Cr Monckton denied that the Council’s trees caused any trouble in this connection. The construction of a drain would remedy the nuisance. Cr Tansey agreed that the trees were not causing a blockage of the flow of water. The Overseer pointed out that the septic tank contract had not been completed by the Borough Council as first proposed. Several councillors remarked upon the objectionable small emanating from the back-water near the tank. The absence of information as to the cost was remarked upon. It was decided that the Council recognise no responsibility, Cr Monckton moving and Cr Elliott seconding a motion accordingly. Minister of Railways, as concerning the establishment of District Advisory Board, by way of assisting the operations of the Railways Department. The opinion was expressed that the convening of meeting's was one for rhe Chamber of Commerce to attend to. | On the motion of Cr Monckton, it was decided that Cr McCormick represent the Council at any meeting convened by the Waipukurau Chamber. Department of .Internal Affairs, as to , the celebration of Armistice Day on the 11th inst. It was resolved to observe the day m the customary manner. No. 5 District Highways Council, forwarding advice as to the following matters.:—(l) Maintenance subsidies, payable by the Main Highways Board, j (2) Main Highways plant—a freight! payment being commented upon. (3) ( Examination of foremen and over- ’ seeds. (4) Payment of expenses to District Highway representatives. (5) • Tour of North Island by Main High- j ways Board. | It was' stated that the subsidy basis ( had been increased from £1 for £1 to ■ £1 10/- for £1 on road expenditure, and . Press criticism generally, suggested closer supervision. The local staff was considered sufficient, and the roads regarded as satisfactory.
Leave of absence was granted the Overseer to enable him to take part in the annual examination. It was resolved to claim half the annual allowance (£5) for expenses of the Council’s representative on the District Highways Council. It was resolved to meet the members of the Board at 11 a.m. on the 2urh Inst., when passing through the district. COMPENSATION CLAIM. Lce ? Mackie, Harker and McKay, the Council’s solicitors, advising as to £lBO 10/- having been claimed 9 by A. H. Tinkham, a Whetukura settler, as compensation arising from the Council taking his land for reading purposes. The matter was referred to the County solicitors, and the chairman and clerk to deal with. ROBINSON’S ROAD. - A plan of the work, 84 chains, proposed on Robinson’s Road, was received back from the District Engineer of the Public Works Department, with several amendments noted, as required. It was stated that Mr Robinson had raised objection to some features of Ihc proposed method of carrying out the work. Cr Kibblcwhite and several councillor remarked upon the value of the Overseer’s overtime in preparing plans
required by the Highways Council, and agreed that he should be remunerated on this score. MIDDLETON ROAD. The re-formation of Middleton Road was the subject matter of tenders, and that of Jas. O’Connor was accepted. The chairman remarked upon the ; need for a point on the Lower Gorge ' Road being cut back, to improve the view, and a corner on the Sanatorium ■ Hill Road lowered. ! COUNTY FINANCE. The chairman read a statement outlining the trend of events as to County expenditure for the year 1925, and ended March 31st, 1926, and the progress of road works, complementary with the position revealed. Herbert £304, and Purimu £l6. Cr Tansey pointed to increased expenditure in England, France, and Get many, as well as other countries. FINANCIAL MATTERS. Accounts passed for payment totalled £754 3/5. GENERAL MATTERS. Cr Kibblcwhite moved that thewages for the driver of the grader be £5 per week, instead of fixed as a salary, as proposed at last meeting.
