4>. RECORD OF RACES. The America Cup is a 100-guinea cup, put up by the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes in 1851, and won by the yacht America. Since then British yachts have crossed the Atlantic on numerous occasions, and made fruitless attempts to regain the trophy. The dates and results of the races are:— 1870— British yacht Cambria came tenth. .-.y ■ , 1871— British yacht‘Livonia won one race out of a series of five. 1876—Canadian yacht Countess of Dufferin lost in two races against the Madeline. 1881—Canadian Atalanta was beaten by the Mischief. Between 1882 and 1893, the Puritan beat, the Genesta, the Alayflower beat the Galatea, and the Voluntecr beat the Thistle. 1893 —Vigilant beat Lord Dunraveh’s Valkryie IT. 1895—Defender beat Valkyrie TH. .1899—Columbia beat Shamrock 11. in three races. 1903—Reliance beat Shamrock HI. 1914—Shamrock IV went to America but the war caused postponement of the contest. 1920 —Resolute beat Shamrock TV. The course is thirty miles in length, leading out into the Atlantic and back to the starting point near Sandy Hook.
