ALLEGED MURDERS.
INSURANCE INCENTIVE.
NEW YORK, January 10.
A message from Guthrie, Oklahoma, states that the mysterious deaths of 9 wealthy Osages prompted a Federal inquiry’in which 160 witnesses were called. .
The inquiry involved the alleged murder ring, reputedly composed of influential Whites, holding insurance policies on Indians lives. The Osages arc Government wards who receive large royalties for oil removed from their tribal lands.
Many Osages dissipate their income after which they borrow heavily from Whites, who, as security, accept insurance policies on their lives, in which the whites are named as beneficiaries. The latest, alleged murder involved the Harry Koan, a rich Osage, whose bullet-pierced body was found. The jury investigating the death indicted five Whites, one of whom was a beneficiary to the extent of 25,000 dollars (£5,000)’ under Roan’s policy. The same man was previously indicted for the murder of W. E. Smith, a wealthy Indian, who died with his wife and house-keeper, when his house was blown up in 1923.
