Mr R. Scott has returned from a visit to New Plymeuth.

Mr T. G. Given is home from a visit ’ to the New Zealand Exhibition.

Mrs R. W. Carpenter is on a visit to the Dominion Exhibition at Dunedin.

Mrs L. Groome, of Hatuma, has returned from an extended visit to England.

Mrs Sydney Johnston, of Oruawharo, Takapau, spent the major portion of 1925 in England, is expected home early in February.

Mr A. Eller, manager of the Pukeora Poultry Farm, left by express this morning, on annual leave, for Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin.

Lieut.-Commander C. Graham-Watson and Mrs Watson arrived in New Zealand last week from Sydney. The former is to replace Lieut-. Commander L. L. Tollemache on H.M.S. Dunedin.

Dr. F. M. B. South’s friends will be pleased to learn that he has such progress towards complete recovery that he has been able to resume practice.

Mr A. J. Kerse returned on Saturday, after spending a very pleasant holiday vacation, during the course of which he visited the Exhibition, expressing special satisfaction as to the excellence of the displays generally.

The engagement is announced of Jessie Myra, second daughter of Mr and Mrs H. T. Wright, of “Woburn,” Hatuma, to Allan, youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs Samuel Campbell, of “Seaview,” Pihama, Hawera.

Mr and Mrs J. H. Turner (Hatuma), have recently returned from a nine months trip to England and are now on a visit to the South Island for two months. They travelled to England via Canada and returned via Suez, spending two months in Australia on their return journey.

A wedding of considerable interest was solemnised at the Methodist Church, Waipawa, last week, when Sylvia Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs M. T. Bott, Waipawa, was married to Gordon Harris, only son of Mr and Mrs F. Harris, of Auckland, the Rev. F. J. Parker officiating.

Lieut-Commander L. Tollemache, R.N., and Mrs Tollemache, following upon the weding cermeony at Takapau last week, left for a tour of the North Island, and will leave New Zealand in February, for England. Lieut. W. K. Marshall, R.N., and his wife, will spend the honeymoon on the coast north of Auckland.

The death occurred at Matawhero, last week, of the Rev. James Urgston Shannon, M.A., aged 67 years. Deceased was born in Braidwood, Lanarkshire, and came to New Zealand about four years ago, being stationed at the Presbyterian Church, Morcre, before going to Matawhero, near Gisborne, 18 months ago. He leaves a widow and three children.

In St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Pahiatua, last week the wedding was solemnised by the Rev H. W. Monaghan, M.A., vicar of Hawera, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Fenwick, vicar of Pahiatua, of Mollie, only daughter of the Maqor and Mayoress of Pahiatua, Mr and Mrs J. D. C. Crewe, and William Douglas, only son of Mr and Mrs Corbett, of Napier.

The death occurred at the R)7(!Tlington Hospital of Mr John McCabe, aged 100 years and 9 months. The late Mr McCabe was a native of Ireland. As a young man he enlisted, and fought with his regiment in the Crimean compaign, also in the Indian Mutiny, and finally he came to New Zealand with the Imperial Forces, and fought through the Maori War. On leaving the Army he settled in the Rangitikei district, where he worked as a farm labourer for many years. Up till quite recently, Mr McCabe retained all his faculties unimpaired, and related incidents of his long career with, remarkable clearness.
