ENTERTAINING EVENTS.
“MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE ” The most profligate court of France was that of Louis X> ~ ■where lovemaking was a past-time. Am: here was a man who stood against the king because in the game of hearts he had decreed that this Prince should marry a girl who had snubla cl him. And so the Prince was forced to become the barber in England. This is the absorbing story that is told in “ Monsieur Beancaire,” the greatest romance that screen has had to be* shown in Waipukurau at Everybody’s Pictures to-mor-row night.
This is the picture which brings Valentino back to the screen and Lebo
Daniels, Doris Kenyon and Lowell Sherman have also important parts in the picture. Lois Wilson, who is known us ‘‘The Covered Wagon'’ Giri, plays the role of the unhappy Queen of France in “Monsieur Beaucaire.” This picture was selected by the late Queen Alexandra for screening at her last birthday party, at Sandringham Castle.
The Scouts will leave Waipukurau by to-morrow’s express, under Captain Gray. It is confidently anticipated that the small balance required will be raised before to-morrow evening. The Scouts cross by the Maori to-morrow evening, from Wellington, and catch a special train from Christchurch next morning, at 9.1 D o'clock, arriving in Dunedin at 5.50 p.m. on Sunday.
The trustees of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind have received a generous gift of £lOOO from Mrs H. A. Massey and Aliss AL I. ALassey, as a contribution towards the cost of new buildings urgently required by the institute. Atrs Alassey. in a letter to the trustees, states that it is in memory of her late husband, Horatio A. Alassey, who died at Invercargill in December, 1923. He had himself intended making a gift to the institute. The death* is annuonccd by Press Association message of Dr George Edward Babites, of Timaru. Dr. Gabitcs was born in Christchurch in 1867, ami educated at Timaru High. School and Edinburgh University. Dr. Gabitcs served with the Seventh Contingent in South Africa', 1891-2, and was awarded the Queen’s Medal and four clasps. In 1900 he was appointed a surgeon-captain in the Aledical Corps, and in 1901 a surgeon-captain in the New Zealand Alilita.
