Macfarlaue left for Wellington to-day in connection with cool storage for butter and cheese. Amongst returning soldiers by the Mau»ari, due on the 18th, is Private R. S. Edwards of Woodville. The monthly mooting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held this evening, also the annual meeting of the Woodville Brass Baud. A further reminder is given of the first annual ball of the Kutneroa Returned Soldiers to bo held in the liafi on Wednesday evening. With agcod floor and excellent music a very enjoyable evening should be the result, The will of the late Mrs Rathbone, formerly of Waipawa, has been sworn for the purposes of probate at under £260,000. It makes provision for bequests to various members of. the family, and directs that half the revenue shall bo set aside for charitable, educational and religious purposes. Mr Walter Yewou, taxi driver, of Pahiatna, announces a Pahi-atua-Palmerston motor service, twice daily, and publishes his timetable. Fares are reasonable. Cars will leave tiro Masonic Hotel, Woodville, at 9 30 a.m. and 2 p.m. leaving Palmerston on return at 10 30 a.m. and 3 p.m. A car will also run from Pahiatua daily for Wellington via Mastertou.
The annual dinner of the farmers will be held on Friday evening next. Short addresses will be delivered by Mr Singleton, assistant director of the Dairy Division, and Messrs Loten and Morris, of the Hawke’s Bay Education Staff. Hammond after 41 years of missionary work, is exceptionally well informed, and is in addition a gifted and entertaining public speaker. His lecture on “ The Mind of the Maori ” on Wednesday . evening will ho of distinct educational value and popular interest. The invitation to attend is open to all. Appearances are often deceptive and they are especially so in the World Drama “ The Appearance of Evil ” which is to-morrow night’s picture attraction. June Btvidge plays the star part and acts superbly while she also puts up something of a record in the number of beautiful dresses which Jshe wears. The working out of the plot is entirely satisfactory and ends happily. There is a very good supporting programmo. The annual Bulb Show and Sa’e of Work in aid of the funds of the
Ladies’ Guild of Holy Trinity Church, will be held in the Drill ' Hall on September 17 th. A very ! attractive programme bas been arranged. There will be plain and fancy work stalls, while sweety produce and homo industries will also be represented. In addition to these attractions there will be a ( variety of competitions, including a baby show. The bill of fare provided should suffice to draw a large attendance.
