Von Hindenburg Foiled.
Petrograd, Sept. 22. Hindenbui'g’s trap is closing, but too late. The enemy forced their way thirty miles down the VilnaLida railway to Biniakoni, but the Russians by driving back the invaders from Maludetchno broadened the passage by which they- were effecting retirement. A fierce battle for the crossing of the Vilia is proceeding. The balk of Bichhorn’s artillery and infantry, after terrible losses, halted. The German infantry presented a pitiable spectacle, bearded, round shouldered, and hardly able to move under the equipment, but the number of artillery and machine guns was impressive. Even the cavalry and motor cyclists are supplied with machine guns. Rassky’s systematic scheme of rearguard action slowed up the German advance on the Dwina, and it is now reduced to a costly series of attacks upon trenches. There is every sign of an early winter. The country is already swept by cold raw winds.
