SENSATION AT CHUTU.
■♦ i ; MURDEROUS ASSAULT. ’ ASSAILANT SHOT BY HIS OWN GUN. Taiitape, Feb. >3. / A sensation occurred at Ohutu last night. It appears that two ■ men; Garlick, i..burner, and Chat- j field, married, rode into Taihape I yesUTday, returning late in the aftoruoon. They evidently quarclled and got oil’their horses, Chat- ■ field being thrown over a bank. ! Had he reached the river death 1 would have been certain, but he , 6 fortunately landed on the verge ' a cliff and" was found subsequently in a dazed condition. His assailant, probably assuming his companion was disposed of, rode off, leading the other 3 horse, and made for Chatfield’s 9 house, where, seizing the carving B knife, he threatened to do for the 1 rest of the family. Fortunately a a man named Oliver was present, and after a desperate struggle lie secured the knife. Garlick then whipped out a jack-knife and renewed the fray. He was again t di sarrned, and then Garlickjumped j / into a two-horse dray, and drove 3 to- his lodgings, secured a loaded 5> gun, and returned and threatened e to shoot anyone who interfered 3 with him. e He tried to induce some spec- . tators to go With him and show y him where Chatfield was, but they e declined. He then asked for Mrs , Chatfield, and on being told she I was gone, said, “I’ll go too.” i. Then the gun went off, and Garlick e fell out of the cart wounded in the If ft arm, chest and shoulder. (j The police and a doctor were y summoned and his injuries at,3 tended to. This morning the man e was conveyed to the Wanganui (3 Hospital.
