Ye-! onlay Mr Bus,-, member lor Balmtl tm, introduced a deputation to the Acting-Minister of Public Works, consisting ut Messrs Hodgins (chairman), and Bolton, of the I’ahiatna County Council. The first request made was for a grant for the Maknri-Bonparoci road, Mr llodgins slating that the read was in very had repah', and that about -CIOOO would In: required to put it into proper order, and id' this amount the County would hud PVJIH if the Roads Pepartment would provide the balance. Mr Bolton pointed out that as the result, of a, Commission that sat it lew rears ago to apportion the cost of maintenance ol this road the Akitio County Council was required to contribute onethird of the annual maintenance charges. Mr 1 toss urged upon the Minis- | ter tin* importance of something j being done to assist the Council j in this matter, as the road in question was in reality a main road along which His Majesty's mails were carried. The Chairman next asked tor a subsidy of £ for k to assist the Conned in bridging the Maknri river at Tylee s f ord, the estimated cost of the bridge being -CSG*». Mr Boss then asked that the Government should provide the funds necessary to shift a bridge ’that had been thrown across a stream, at Mathieson’s some years ago to .'mother and more suitable site, lie stated that reports had been obtained noth from the Bonds Engineer and the local engineers, and all agreed that it was advisable to shift this bridge up the j gully and deviate the road. He considered that as the local body was not responsible lor placing the bribge in its present positionthat, in tael, it was placed there I in oppo.-.il ion to their wishes - the | Government should provide the j £lloo necessary to make the road ) deviation and re-erect the bridge. Mr Boss thanked the Minister for his courteous reception of their requests, ami said that in his opinion the --uhsid}' askeb for in conned ion with the bridge at Tylee’s ford was much less necessary than the other items they load referred, to. Tim Chairman concurred with Mr 1 loss in this opinion.
