Wellington, September 4. The death occurred to-day of D. W. Virtue, head of the firm of Virtue & Co..grainand flcuruifcieLaLtti, nged 73 years. Deceased formerly resided in Otago and Hokitika. He took a great interest in religious matters, and was well known for his benevolent disposition. In the Divorce Court yesterday decrees nisi were granted by the Chief Justice as follows: Ellen Polkinghorne v. William Polkinghorne, Elizabeth Benner v. A. J. Benner. May Skipper v. Archibald Skipper, Spencer K. Eadford v. Susannah Kadford, Annie S. Morrison v. W. Morrison, Lucy E. South y. Joseph South. A meeting of delegates from the city and suburban school committees is to be held on Friday to consider the action of the Education Board in dismissing Chief Inspector Lee. It is understood that a vote of want of confidence in the members of the Board who led in the matter will probably be moved, and also a further motion that the Board be requested to rescind its resolution and hold an inquiry into the whole subject. Mr Allan Orr, well known in labour circles, and the secretary of the Drivers' Union, was to day fined 425, and ordered to pay 27s costs, for assaulting a member of the Union, from whom he desired to collect money. Complainant was a tram car driver and the assault took place on the car. This day. Lieut.-Col. Robin has been appointed in command of the Otago military district, and Lieut.-Col. Webb, whom he succeeds, will be { transferred to Canterbury, vice Major- j Gordon, retired. Lieut.-Col. Newall remains in Wellington. In the Divorce Court decrees nisi were granted in the case of John White v. Harriet White and James Hodge v. Mary Hodge. Judgment in tbe case of Fox v. Fox was reserved. The Chief Justice and Mr Justice Williams will try the petition against the return of Mr F. H. Haselden, M.H.R. for Patea. Invekoargill, September 5. Summing up in the coiling cases, Mr Justice Denniaton referred to the statements made by the accused to tbe police. It was not proper after getting aome information leading them to suspect the accused, to take them separately into rooms surrounded by constables, and ask them questions. What was done seemed to be going beyond tbe recognised duty of a constable.
