When extricated he was found to be dreadfully mutilated, having one leg practically severed and the other partially, and every limb more or less damaged. The remains ware taken to the morgue to await an inquest on Wednesday. The deceased was an old settler here, having arrived in 1841. He was the first Superintendent of the Province, and took a prominent part as an offioer in the Maori War. He was representative several times in the HoDse, and latterly was a J.P., also an interpreter. The deceased leaves a widow and several children, one boy being in South Africa.

The greatest sorrow is evinoed for the loss, and there is much outcry at the danger of the crossing.
