Nicholls, Main Street, Pahiatua, on Tuesday next, 19th inst. The foundation stone of the Wesleyan Church in Dannevlrke is laid this afternoon, and Mr Peryman and a party of friends have gone down to the ceremony. The Rev M. K. Gilmour, who was appointed to Dannevirke by the last Wesleyan Conference, has been getting a good hold of the people there and making himself well liked. The prospects of the church are very favourable.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Conncil will be held to-inorrow evening. The fishing season will start in this district on the 1st of October. The Jewish Day of Atonement and Fasting commences at 5.30 this evening, and will be continued till 6.30 to-mor-row evening.

We have tasted an orange grown on Mr H. Williams' property at Napier. The fruit was grown in the open air. It was of a very nice flavor, but rather thick-skinned.

In our report of the W.C.T.U. social we omitted to mention that Miss Levy save a recitation, and that a number of young ladies gave an exhibition of their histrionic powers in a dialogue. Mr J. Langhan has given up the contract for the additions to the Drill Hill, and the tender of Mr J. W. Cross being the next lowest has been accepted for the work.

Owing to the pressure on our space we are compelled to hold over reading matter including a commentary on the Dreyfus condemnation, the conclusive of the Liberal demonstration report, and other matters of interest.

At the Napier Supreme Court yesterday, before Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout, the Grand Jury threw out the bill against Forbes and Minto charged with breaking and entering. The Wesleyans are going to hold their annual evangelistic mission week, the preacher being the Rev. M. K. Gilmour, of Dannevirke. The services will begin on Sunday, there being a special children's service in the afternoon in addition to the usual morning and evening ones, and will be continued through the week. The feature of Friday nights' concert will be the re-staging of the fairy play " Bo-peep," which proved so successful when produced at the Institute Concert a few weeks ago. The play will be enhanced by the introduction of several choruses. Mr J. Walls, who is the possesser of a tenor voice of much sweetness and power, is to contribute an item, while the names of such old favorites as Miss Laura Hall, Miss Monteith, and Mr W. H. We have to congratulate Messrs Ingpen and Moore, of the local Telegraph Office, on the very excellent " copy " of the Public Works' Statement supplied to us, totalling some 7000 or 8000 words. We must say that we think it a somewhat ridiculous idea putting the Department to the trouble of sending the Statement at all. The Minister for Public Work must have had his Statement primed a week ago, and it would have been quite an easy matter to have had copies forwarded by post to the various newspapers.

We are requested to inform our readers that the special sale held in the sample room at the Club Hotel by the Dresden Piano Company will close at the end of this week. A splendid collection of pianos and organs can be seen by anyone interested, and the prices cannot be beaten by any firm in the colony. The Dresden Company sell as many instruments in the course of the year as any other four houses put together. Mr George Hunter, the popular member for Waipawa, was the subject of some highly complimentary remarks from a political opponent, Mr Hornsby, at the meeting on Saturday night. The latter gentleman said that Mr Hunter was one of the straightest, best, and most honourable men in this colony. If all the sheep farmers in New Zealand were George Hunters, he thought there would be more George Hunters in Parliament. He (Mr Hornsby) was not going to abuse any man simply because he differed from him in politics, but believed in giving credit where credit is due, and if that were more often done they would not find politics brought to their present level. The following is the County overseer's report on the Woodville Riding, which was presented to the last meeting of the Waipawa County Council:—The footbridge at Clausen's crossing, Maharahara, has been erected since your last meeting. The day labour contractor, under instructions, will plough off the high edges of Ross' road during the coming month, I have had a new culvert inserted on Clarke's road, the old one having fallen in. The Wood-ville-Kumeroa road near the Kumeroa township has been repaired and is now in fair order. I have had occasion to have the Masterton road repaired, the firewood drays having cut the road up considerably. I have also had a groin erected on the Pinfold road to protect the small bridge near Mr Edwards' house. The surfaceman for this riding has, without permission, neglected his duty by being absent from his work without just cause. I have reported the matter to the chairman, whom I understand has written him. Yates' Reliable and Genuine Seed have arrived and can only be obtained from Monteith Bros., in 3d and 6d packets. —Advt. Do not forget that you can buy your drapery and clothing cheaper than ever at the Bargain Sale of the Economic. Special bargains in dress materials, ladies' capes, macintoshs, jackets, and millinery as we do not intend to carry any of these lines over to the next season. A. Rosenberg & Co.— Advt.
