Boxing Championship of the World.

A NEW ZEALANDEE WINS. Sidney, February 28. A boxing match for tho championship of the world and a large s-take has taken place in Mexico between Robert Fitzsimmons, of New Zealand, and Peter Mahr, the Irish Champion. The title of champion of the world was recently handed over by James Corbett on his retirement to Maher. The contest was of short duration, Fitzsimmons forced matters from the start, and soon had his opponent in difficulties. After a few minutes' boxing Maher was unable to come up to time, and Fitzsimmons was declared winner. Frank Slavin, the Australian boxer, at present iu London, has challenged Fitzsimmons for £IOO a-side.

[Fitzsimmons was at one time a blacksmith in Ashburton and South Canterbury.]
