LIVE STOCK TRADE. vr Ml ', M ;, H(?ul ' y re Porfcs'under date March sth, 1896 : The number of sheep forwarded to-day were quite equal to the advertised en tnes,and with a fair sprinkling of cattle the yards were more than occupied, and the attendance of the general stock-owning public was the largest for some time past. The active enquiry „ o tcd during the close ot the last sale was most conspicuous by its absence, and the various lots oftered scarcely received at jntiou. This spirit having prevailed during most of the day, only a moderate business was done, beef being the only class receiving anv demand worthy of notice. On Tuesday last a draft of dairy cows on account of Mr Matheson, hairanga, was offered, but as most of them were in milk for some time they did not commend themselves to the dairymen present, and only a ir.o lerate number were sold. On Saturday last a draft of young horses forwarded by Mr E. Hammond received fair demand, resulting in 10 out of 12 being sold at prices satisfactory to the vendor. The subjoined quotations indicate the tone of the market:--Cattle.—Fat bullocks, £6 18s; fat cows, £4 7s Cd to £4 13s; 15 to 18-mos cattle, 28s to 40s ; weaners, small, 13s to 20s. Sheep.—2 to 4-tooth wethers, 7s 7d ; do, 6s 9d; small 2-tooth ewes, 5s Gd; f.m. ewes, 5s to 5s 6d ; woolly lambs, 8s 2d to 3s 9d ; culls, Is to Is 6d. Pigs.—Stores, Bs. Mr Matheson's dairy cows, £4 12a Gd to £6 15s, average £5 10s. Mr Hammond's horses—Ponies, broken, £5 5s ; unbroken, £3 5s ; 3-yr-old colts and fillies, £5 to £7; 6-yr-old weight-carrier, £ll.
