Kumeroa Road Board.

The monthly meeting waa held on Saturday. Present—Messrs Lynch (Chairman), Martin, Buchanan, and Bargrove. CORRESPONDENCE. From Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington, re thirds for road to Mr McKay’s section. From F. Badley, Danevirke, trustee in Cosgrove’s estate, asking what balance was available on the Mangaioro contract, as the creditors wanted to wind up the estate. —Clerk to inform Mr Badley that there was no surplus after completing the road. From County Council, re Gilmour’s catting on Otawhao Koad, and acknowledging notice re Biver Bead being proclaimed a main road. From G. S. AUom, congratulating Board on having altered road, 'and enclosing account for £4 11s, cost of repairing the road after the late floods. From Auditor-General, with bal-ance-sheet certified to. From B. H. Beany, stating he would inspect the Otawhao and Biver Beads on behalf of the Government. —The Chairman reported he had inspected the Biver Boad with Mr Beany, and he had said they could get a splendid road down the Biver B»ad. Mr Beany said the Board had better get their Engineer to lay off ihe Otawhao Boad works for the expenditure of the £4OO voted by Government.—lt was resolved that the Engineer lay off the works accordingly. From D. Wright, offering to clear Upper Otawhao Boad for £7. From E. and T. Pattison certifying to fence done by J. Matthews. GENERAL. Mr Martin reported that he had seen Mr Hunter re the Otope Boad, and he had offered to accept £7 10s in settlement of work done on the road. He had felled 100 chains of road. —Kesolved that Mr Hunter be raid, and that work to the value of £SO be done on the road. W. B. Edwards mote enclosing account for £25 17s 2d legal services i.i case of Norman v. Board.—The Chairman said that Mr Greville had

promised to pay half the costs. — Mr Buchanan said Norman appeared to be able to make the Kumeroa Board sit up.—Mr Martin said it would have been better had the case gone to Court.—Mr Hewitt said that the claim was for £6O for work which Norman had never. done at all, so that they were bound to defend it.—lt was resolved to pay the Board’s half of the account. TENDERS. Maintenance Otawhao Road:—o. Potter, £24 12s; R. Pattison, £2O. On the motion of Mr Martin, seconded by Mr Bargrove, it was resolved to accept no tender in order that the Cross Road could be included in the contract. BATE. Mr Buchanan moved, “That a rate of in the £be levied for the ensuing year.” In reply to Mr Bargrove, Mr Hewitt stated that a £d rate would produce £l2B 9s 2d, and the fd rate last year produced £214 9s lid. Mr Hewitt further stated that, with the present credit balance, there would be £3OO in hand with the subsidy after all liabilities are paid. Mr Bargrove said a Jd rate would then be sufficient. Mr Mackie said £d rate would be required for the Township Ward. The Chairman said they should also have £d rate for the River Ward. Mr Mackie asked whether the Otawhao people would agree to contribute to Little’s Road, which they had used. The Board had had to replace two bridges on that road ? He considered it would be fair that they should contribute. Mr Bargrove said the Cross Road was going to run the Otawhao Ward into some money. Mr Martin said they could strike an extra rate on the other Wards at next meeting. The motion was then carried. DRAINAGE. Mr Buchanan stated that Mr H. Smith had made a drain and stopped the creek, on the River Road, and that the water was now running along the formation. It was resolved to request Mr Smith to clear the drain and stop the water. ACCOUNTS amounting to £53 18s 4d were passed for payment. TOTARA ROAD. Mr Bargrove asked that the Engineer lay off £4O to £SO of work on the bridle-track through Mr Taylor’s property on a grade to be suitable for dray traffic, and this was agreed to. CONTRACTS. It was decided that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for the expenditure of the Otawhao grant, and for clearing the Otawhao Road.
