A PLEASANT GATHERING. About 50 gentlemen met in the large Commercial room of the Club Hotel last evening to say farewell to Mr Hale®, The gathering was a thoroughly representative one, Mr Halse’s old comrades of the Fire Brigade and Football field being in force. Mr Ha : se was presented with a handsome scarf pm as a mark of the esteem in which he has been held during hie residence in this district. His Worship the Mayor, in making the presentation, said that since Mr Halse had been here he was always to the fore in everything, and had, proved himself to be.a very good man indeed. He had been in Woodville five years, and by his politeness and courteous behaviour in the Bank, and outside, had made himself a universal favorite- Mr Burnett spoke very highly of his (Mr Halse’s) business qualities while in th® Bank. Then he had been, for some time an active member of the Fire Brigade, aod had taken great interest in all matters appertaining to the good of the Brigade. In fact m every thing with which Air Halse was connected, cricket, football, tennis, he gave his whole heart to its advancement.
Mr Burnett then made the presentation, and asked them all to charge their glasses and drink to the health and prosperity of their guest, Mr Halse. The toast was drunk with great enthusiasm and musical honors.
Mr Hnlse replied in a very happy speech. He thanked the company very much for their kindness, coming, as it did, so unexpectedly. He was sorry- to leave Woodville, but hoped to see his friends occasionally, as he was not going far away. (Cheers), He wished them all success.
Mr Smith addressed a few well-chosen words to the company. During the time Mr Halse been in the bank he had been very steady and very attentive to business, and he wished him success iq his new sphere. Songs and recitations were given, by members of the company, who passed a most pleasant evening. Host Sandol catered in liberal style, and did much to add to the pleasure of the gathering.
