[Correspondence is invited upon subjects of general interest, but we do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by the writers.} THE TABLET ON EDUCATION. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Your extract from the Tablet, which appeared iu your issue of the 2nd inst., on the Education question, has so far, passed without comment, With your permission I will reproduce some of its statements and make a fewrpjuarks upon them. The Editor of this noble Tablet says “we are to have Catholic Schools whatever may betide.” Alright, and welcome, but you cannot reasonably expect the State lo aid yon iu pouring bigotry and prejudice into the minds of young colonists. It is the duty of the State to fo.st r good sense and reason, not superstition and intolerance. Then follows. “ The alternative, (that is the want of the schools), is the loss of our own Souls and the Souls of our children; we must avoid the damnation of hell at any cost, The Pope commands us; our Archbishops, Bishops and Clergy command us,” &c. Now, sir, that is not the alternative at all. The alternative of not having Catho ic schools would be that the minds of Catholic children would not be poisoned every day of their lives. Being free from tho cental Interference of priests, healthful holiest thought would claim them for its own, and they would grow up men and u'mjiou worthy of the name. R-a on won't! teach them to say n Tho Pope is a man, the Archbishops, the Bishops tin I the Clergy are mere men, and, tho editor of the Tablet is only a man, and, behold ! wo also are men, and have as much right to command you as you have to command us ; and as for the “ damnation of hell ” you can have it all to yourselves, for it only exists in the diseased imaginations of misguided men.—l am itc., I'smux.
