A sawing match took place at Euroa on the Ist inst. for a stake of £3O a-side, Ballard and Guppy, of Suffy sawmills, undertaking to cut 6,170 super, feet of timber in a working day of nine hours, which Mr. G. Thompson, of Bolio sawmills, asserted could not he done. The result of the match was that a sawing record was put up that took the most experienced men by surprise. The logs were “spotted,” ready for the saw, and at the start eight logs, averaging Ift. Oiu., were broken down in 13min. After working six hours and a half it was found that the henchman, W. Ballard, had cut no less than B,oooft. of timber, and the judges at once declared the match over. Four thousand feet is ordinarily reckoned as a good day’s work.
