MESSES BDHONDSON, SELLABS AND CO.'S NEW

WABEHOT76E.

About eighteen months ago Mr Toxward was instructed by Mr Edmondson to prepare a design for a new warehouse, to be erected for the firm of Edmondson, Sellars and Co. on the vacant Bite at the corner of Grey street and Lambton Quay, which is commonly known as Tbatoher's corner. MrToxward submitted a design, which was approved by Mr Edxnondton, who, however, before inviting tenders, decided to submit the designs to some English architect. Mr Edmondson proceeded to England, and while there took the opinions of several gentlemen eminent in the profession of architecture, who unanimously passed high encomiums upon the design. ' The result was thai Mr Edmondson instructed Mr Toxward to commence the erection of the building in accordance with the designs submitted, and without the slightest deviation. We mention these facts because they are* creditable to colonial skill, as showing that even in this young community we - have professional gentlemen whose works will successfully stand the oritical examination of men of long and extensive experience in the mother country. The new building designed by Mr Toxward will certainly be one of the finest as regards style and .finish, existing in the colony. So far as can be gathered from the design for the facade, the exterior will be chastely neat and imposing in appearance. Hhe building will have a frontage of 56ft to Grey street, and 60ft to Lambton Quay, the design of the two facades being purely elassio. The building will consist of two Bloreys, or three including the basement floor. The front elevation will be divided into equal spaces by eight threequarter circular fluted Corinthian 1 columns retting upon pedestals, the entabluture and parapet being in the same order of architecture. The basement storey will be lighted with equare windows. There will be an entrance from Grey street, and another through the basement storey, on the Lambton Quay Bide, the communication from the basement to the offices on the first floor being by means of an interior staircase. The first floor is lighted by large semicircular windows, with pediments, pilasters, corner brackets, and other ornamentation. The upper storey is lighted by windows with pilasters, carved brackets, and architraves, surmounted with an entablature and pediments in the Grecian style. The whole of the windows will be filled with plate glass. The roof will be slated, and fitted with lead. Each floor contains about 4160 superficial square fee/.. Thei*e will a cartway from Grey street communicating wilh an American lift. The building will be entirely used as a drapery warehouse, and the cost of erection ia estimi ted at £1400. It will be completed early in April next. The building will be erected in a most substantial manner by Mr J. Beard, -who has obtained the contract

KXTEKSIOK OJ? MESBBS KEVIN AND COS PEBMIBKS.

A very spacious two-storey addition has been recently made to Messrs Levin and Co's premises, Grey street, by extending the proceut building a distance of 40ft by 60ft towards Panama street.
