There were two discharged from the hospital yesterday. The interprovincial regatta, which the United Boating Club has decided is to be held here in February or March, promises to have a liberal programme. Public feeling is strongly in favor of it.

Lyttelton, Tuesday. Arrived — The Mary Webster. The Kaipara and the Silver Lining resumed their voyage for Timaru.

Dunedin, Tuesday. The Taranaki sailed for the North with passengers per Otago engagement to-day. Single women were engaged at £40. The men are mostly nominated in the province, and absorbed into the population. Double the number could readily find employment.

The " Guardian" opposes the expenditure on the Coast defences, and says it would be a waste of money, and provoke attack on us if England were at war. Our real safety lies in the absence of all defensive works. " Commercial towns, it says, are never bombarded in modern warfare.

Dr Begg preached to a very large audience on Sunday. He has proceeded on a tour up country. The immigrants by the Dover Castle are nearly all engaged at good wages. Mr E. B. Cargill has returned by the Otago.

Mr Godfrey, sculptor, has been com-; missioned to erect tombstone to St. J. Branigan, subscribed for by the Otago police and the Armed Constabulary.
